Tiger Leaping Gorge Cycling Tour

Tiger Leaping Gorge Cycling Tour

14 days – Sportive, Family Friendly

This trip starts at the old town of Lijiang. Old wooden houses and stone roads with mountain water streams running within the old town made Lijiang one of most popular traveling destination in China. The altitude is 3300m. For the first couple of days we have some warm up rides to Naxi village and Lashi lake. This beautiful lake is not only a scenic spot but also an important habitat for over 70 species of migratory birds and various plants, fish, shellfish and river snails. At day 4 we head north to the Tiger Leaping Gorge, then start a two days hike. An ancient legend says that a tiger used this rock as its stepping stone so it could leap across from one side of the gorge to the other, which is how the gorge got its name. It is believed to be one of the deepest gorges in the world. Soon after we get back to our bikes we cross the First Bend of Yangtze River, known throughout the world and continue to Shaxi on the Tea Horse Caravan Trail, the preceding silk road. Close to our destination natural hot springs are waiting for us to relax our bodies and minds. The picturesque Erhai Lake and the Cangshan mountain range are our destination panorama in Dali old town.

the history of Lijiang is tied to the Naxi ethnic minority group, who have lived in the
area for more than 1,400 years. Today their population numbers around 300,000 and more than half of the Naxi live in Lijiang. The origins of the Naxi can be traced back to the nomadic Tibetan tribes of Qinghai. The Mongols were likely responsible for driving them south into Yunnan.

and river snails. 36 KM
